The simplest approach to report bogus claims is to go to Ask EDD and pick the Report Fraud category to fill out an online Fraud Reporting Form. You can also fax your request to 1-866-340-5484 or contact the EDD Fraud Hotline at 1-800-229-6297. (for reporting fraud only). When reporting fraud, offer as much information as possible regarding the problem. Include names, addresses, phone numbers, and if possible, proof of identification such as a driver's license number or social security number.
If you suspect fraudulent activity on your account, do not pay any bills that may have come in from unknown parties. Contact your bank or credit card company directly to find out how to stop payment on the checks. Also, notify each of the following organizations that might have received fraudulent payments: your electric company, gas company, water department, land surveyor, mortgage lender, credit bureau, and any other company that might have been paid by check.
Once you have taken these steps, submit your report of fraud by going to Ask EDD and selecting the Submit a Fraud Report button. This will start the process with EDD.
It is important to remember that EDD cannot investigate or prosecute fraud reports itself but must send them to the appropriate law enforcement agency for investigation. Also, note that some crimes require prosecution by the state where they occurred so check with your local district attorney's office to see what role it may play in investigating fraud cases.
