Form 3949-A can be used to report a scam if you believe or know of someone who is conducting tax fraud. You can get a copy of the form by phoning the IRS Tax Fraud Hotline at 800-829-0433, but the IRS will not listen to claims over the phone, nor will you be able to report tax fraud online at the IRS website. However, you may report tax evasion anonymously.
Taxpayers have used Form 3949-A for several decades after it was first introduced to allow victims of fraud to notify the IRS. The form is available in most libraries and through other resources for those who cannot obtain it directly from the IRS. It is recommended that you include your full name, address, date of birth, social security number (for verification purposes), and a description of what acts of fraud you suspect have been committed against you.
In addition to reporting tax fraud directly to the IRS, taxpayers should take other steps to protect themselves from being scammed. Only pay taxes out of your own account, otherwise you are just giving away your money. If you receive an email asking you to send money with no explanation as to why this is necessary, then it is most likely a scam.
Taxpayers should watch their financial accounts regularly for any sign of unauthorized activity. If something seems off, contact your bank or credit card company immediately. Scammers will often use stolen information to open new accounts that appear to be from reputable companies so they can steal money from innocent people.
To report the scam, contact Bank of America directly. Bank of America also offers a phone number where you may report any suspicious behavior. If you want to start the complaint over the phone, dial 1-800-432-1000. Be cautious of such scams. They can all look similar, so keep reading for more information about this scam and others like it.
