In all, 22 people were slain in murders in Maine in 2020, including three persons killed in a shooting spree in Washington County. The city of New York, N.Y. According to NYPD data, at least 321 individuals have been killed in New York City so far this year, exceeding the 319 murders registered in the five boroughs in all of 2019. In comparison, there were 230 murders between January 1 and September 14 of previous year.
The number is also higher than the 280 homicides recorded in all of 2008. The highest number of murders in a single year was in 1999, when 652 people were killed.
The increase in the number of murders is mainly due to higher rates of violence across the city, including within specific neighborhoods. There have been more than 70 shootings each week on average this year, with several incidents resulting in death.
In addition, there has been one apparent homicide every other day this year. The rate of killings is currently higher than at any time since 2004, when 345 people were murdered.
